A safe space

to achieve your emotional
well-being

Hi!

I'm Peggy Monterroso.

A psychotherapist with 15 years of experience working with children, teenagers, and adults.

My journey into psychology began when I was 20 years old, doing social work at an orphanage in Cameroon. That moment made me decide to become a psychologist.

My early years of practice were spent working with NGOs supporting children and teenagers at social risk. Since then, I have worked both in institutions and in private practice, always with the same goal: to create a safe place — a place of hope, connection, and transformation.

I was born in the United States, grew up in Costa Rica, and spent 9 years living as an expat in Panama and Sweden. That experience of navigating life between cultures gave me a deep understanding of the unique challenges that come with living abroad — identity, belonging, adaptation, and loneliness. I now live and work in San José, Costa Rica, and I have a special connection with expats and those who know what it feels like to live between worlds.

I work with children, teenagers, and adults facing a wide range of mental health challenges, including depression, anxiety, trauma, relationship difficulties, low self-esteem, grief, burnout, personal growth, life transitions, and family & parenting challenges — always creating a safe and compassionate space for healing and growth.

As a mother of two, I also bring a personal understanding of the joys and challenges of family life.

I offer sessions in both English and Spanish.

Services

Each of the therapy approaches I work with, help me take a more holistic approach to support your well-being.

EMDR

It makes it possible to access traumatic memory networks in our brain, facilitating information processing to be transformed by building new associations between traumatic memory and more adaptive memories or information; facilitating the elimination of emotional discomfort.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

This approach focuses on how thoughts, behaviors, and emotions have an impact on the person and their environment. It focuses on the problems and difficulties of the “here and now”.

Therapy Focused on Emotions

It is based on attachment theory and recognizes the important role of emotions in how we relate to others. Through this approach, people are helped to experience and share their emotions and basic emotional needs, to structure new interactions and to build more secure bonds.

When to seek therapy:

• When circumstances exceed your personal resources to face them.
• When emotional discomfort affects your performance in daily activities.
• When you need a space to be heard and understood.
• When you require guidance in a particular situation.
• When you want to improve a specific are of your life.

I can help you if you are going through:

• Problems at work.
• Anger management.
• Couple problems.
• Depression.
• Social skills.

  Generalized anxiety.

Testimonials

When I started therapy sessions with Peggy, I was in a mental knot. As we progressed in therapy, we found a safe place where I was acquiring tools to continue progressing in my emotional health. I really like her treatment, she listens, she is understanding and empathetic, but at the same time she hits the point that needs to be worked on (even if it’s not what I want to hear). I confess that it is not always easy for me to work through these issues, but I am encouraged to know that Peggy gives me the necessary guidance to overcome them.

With Peggy I have learned a lot. She taught me  to manage my emotions. Helped me feel better with myself and gradually get out of the depression I was in. Now I know what to do when I feel bad and how to handle my irrational thoughts.
